Our Craftsmen

A team of engineers and professionals who are totally committed to building outstanding boats and who know the racing boat business intimately. Learn what inspires our engineers to create the world’s most technical and innovative rowing boats!

Stämpfli is always at the forefront of introducing technology and innovation to racing boats. During the 1950s the company experimented with the design of a U-shaped hull rather than the more common semi-circle shape. This proved to be successful and the rest of the rowing world switched to the new design.

Also at this time the development of the first Aluminium rigger was under way to replace the traditional steel riggers and thus to dramatically reduce the weight of the boats.

In the nineties we designed and developed the first 'prepreg' carbon fibre wing rigger.

The development of the Stämpfli ST1 Single - the World's first all-carbon autoclave mono-hull single scull has been the most recent confirmation of Stämpfli leading the way in racing boat construction.

Phil Gregory - Master Boatbuilder

Phil is Managing Director of Janousek & Stämpfli Racing Boats. He is recognised as the Master Boatbuilder in the UK. Over more than twenty-five years he has created nearly 6,000 outstanding Janousek & Stämpfli racing boats.

Phil's involvement with racing boats started in Nottingham when he decided to listen to the publican in his local pub, The Rose & Crown in Smalley, who suggested that Phil should join the Nottingham Britannia Boat Club.

He was invited to join Leander Club in 1973 and Phil's objective was to represent his country at rowing.

As Phil was still living in Derbyshire he used to drive from Derby to Henley virtually every evening for a couple of years until he moved to Henley in 1975.

In 1975 he won the Britannia Cup at Henley Royal Regatta at stroke in a record time, which held for fourteen years.

In 1976 he trialled for the GB National Team and won GB Trials in a Coxed Pair.

He rowed in the GB National Team from 1976 to 1979 and won the Fours Head & Eights Head. He also rowed in the World Championships in Amsterdam in 1977.

He returned to Leander Club in 1980 & won the Britannia Cup again at Henley Royal Regatta.

Phil is never happier than when he is discussing boats - hull design, materials, equipment, races - you name it and Phil has a considered view on it!

This knowledge and his desire to produce outstanding boats make him the ideal person to talk to and get advice from when you want a new boat or just how to adjust a rigger.
